Mike Miller, Vice President, Risk Management & Safety; Advance Auto Parts Inc.

Michael Miller is Vice President Safety & Risk for Advance Auto Parts joining in August of 2017. Michael is part of the Leadership Team at Advance Auto Parts and Supply Chain Team. In this role Michael is responsible for the risk management function and all safety programs for the company. Advance Auto Parts has over 100 distribution locations, 5500 stores, 1300 franchises, 74,000 employees, and 19,000 vehicles. Michael is also on the Board of Directors for the National Association of EHS Management (NAEM) and has been an NAEM member since 1998. Michael has been in the EHS field for over 20 years in multi-industry manufacturing, distribution, and food & beverage.

 

Prior to his role at Advance Auto Parts, Michael was Vice President of EHS for Dean Foods. In this role Michael provided leadership to over 80 EHS professionals in both enterprise, operations and logistics environments. Current key initiatives include deployment of a camera telematics coaching solution, launching a formal mentoring program for field EHS leaders, and re-branding Dean Foods's behavior based safety strategy.

 

Michael revamped the EHS function at Dean Foods overseeing several capital projects around waste water treatment, ammonia compliance, and leading a behavioral safety program that has resulted in over 60% reduction in injuries in 6 years, $130 million in P&C reserve releases, and significantly reduced claim costs for the field.

 

Prior to Dean Foods Mike was the Senior Director of Risk Management, EHS, & Product Compliance for Apex Tool Group. While at ATG, Mike was responsible for setting up international insurance and EHS programs in over 40 countries. Prior to the ATG, Mike was the EHS Director for a segment of Danaher Corporation which was a contributing business to the ATG joint venture. Prior to Danaher, Mike spent several years in progressively increased responsible roles within EHS functions at Textron Corporate and then was the EHS business unit leader for Textron's E-Z-GO golf car. Mike started his EHS career at Texas Instruments as a college intern and also attended his first Forum during his internship in 1998.

 

Mike has a degree in Environmental Science & Policy from Clark University, graduate work from Clark University and Bryant University. He studied earth systems science and conducted climate change research at Columbia University's Biosphere 2 Center. Mike is a certified Six Sigma Greenbelt and has extensive training in lean manufacturing and behavior based safety.
